I’ve been writing, painting and drawing ever since I could using a variety of media and art expressions including acrylics, graphite, charcoal, photography and words. My style has changed over 30 years but still, I like to paint what fascinates me. People and abstracts are on the top of that list right now.
I’m never short of interests and I hate to be bored…so I end up being driven by a frenetic need for challenge, unending change and living on the edge. I like to explore colour, texture and light in various media, and work at dispelling the traditional idea that an artist must stick to one medium or one style. No truer moment of artistic passion exists than that of the moment I am staring at an empty canvas and a new tube of paint. At that moment, the possibilities are endless.
I’ve lived and worked around the world, operating local from anywhere, creating images and a body of work, essentially telling stories one way or another. My paints and pencils have gone from China & Malaysia, the Arctic Circle & London, to North America, to the corporate world, and everywhere in between. Schooled at UC Berkeley and Indiana University, I currently reside in Raleigh North Carolina, USA.
My earliest influence was Van Gogh, particularly his work in The Poet’s Garden III and A Road at Saint-Remy with Female Figure. When I’m in abstract style, I am decidedly in deKooning and Diebenkorn’s debt.
I also create fine art photographic images, focused on travel, the performing arts and human interest.
The search is still on for the best way to say what I want to say, be it with paints or photographs or written words. And I suppose I’ll always be searching. Art, after all, is just another way of having a conversation.
